Donald G. Scofield, Jr. was born
on February 29, 1960 in Paterson,
New Jersey to Donald and
Gwendolyn Scofield. The oldest of four children, he grew up in rural Sussex County, New
Jersey. Don graduated from the College of William
& Mary in Williamsburg,
Virginia in 1982 with a BA
degree. After graduation, he worked at the Geddy
Foundry for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and then as a resident
counselor for the Methodist Children's Home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
In September of 1984, Don
entered Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey.
He married the former Donna Hope Pierce of Dublin, Virginia
in December of that same year. After internship at Old
First Church
in Newark, NJ
and First Baptist
Church in Somerville,
NJ, Don graduated from Princeton
in 1987 with a Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained to the ministry
in June of 1987 and served as the Assistant Pastor of First Baptist
Church in Somerville, NJ
until November of 1987.
From November 1987 until
November 1995, the Scofields converted a 200 acre farm in Westfield, North
Carolina into a non-denominational Christian
Camp and retreat Center. At the same time Don did his graduate work in
counseling and worked as a counselor and instructor in psychology at Surry Community College.
Don served as Pastor of Flat
Rock Presbyterian Church in Mount
Airy, North Carolina
from 1993 to February 1996. From
February of 1996 to December 2000, he served as pastor of Petersburg
Presbyterian Church in Petersburg,
West Virginia. As a member
of Shenandoah Presbytery, he was a member of the Committee for Education
and Congregational Nurture, the committee for Camp Paddy Run and the
Church Redevelopment Strategy Task Force. Don also worked extensively
with the development of a Lutheran-Presbyterian Mission Community in the
Potomac Highlands region of West
Virginia. In Grant County, WV, Don served as
the President of the Grant County Ministerial Association and was one of
the founding board members of the local Habitat for Humanity
affiliate.
Don completed his Doctor of Ministry
degree from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago in 2003. The focus of his
studies was parish revitalization.
Currently in his 7th
year as pastor of the Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church, Don serves as
Chairman of the Committee on Ministry for the Presbytery of Western NC,
Chairman of the Professional Consultation Committee for the Clinical
Pastoral Education Program at Rutherford Hospital, Volunteer Chaplain at
the hospital, and Vice-President of Equip, Inc., a missionary training
center in Marion, NC.
Don and his wife, Donna, have three
daughters, Hope, Jessie, Kate, and twin sons, William and Zachary. The family shares their home with a
dog, 2 cats, a mouse, and enjoys reading, music and
sports.
